What is classified as a dental emergency?

We understand this can be a difficult assessment, particularly if you’re not a dental professional. Learning what counts as a dental emergency will help you identify when you need to contact Hanwell Dental Centre for urgent care and treatment:

• Severe and persistent bleeding.
• A blow to the mouth area resulting in extreme pain and/or bleeding/numbness/chipped or loose teeth.
• Wisdom tooth pain.
• Tooth sensitivity or pain that keeps you awake at night (this could indicate a dental infection; therefore, root canal treatment may be possible to save the teeth).
• A lump or swelling in the jaw.

Please call 999 immediately if you are experiencing breathing difficulties – do not call the practice.

How we can help you in an emergency

Step 1: Contact us as early as you can during the day. This will allow us to book you in for an appointment as early as we can. We reserve several appointments specifically for emergency care, though these slots are limited. We recommend calling us as early as possible before these become fully booked.
Step 2: When you call our reception team, they will ask you about your symptoms, and we let you know how to care for your mouth whilst you wait for your appointment slot.
Step 3: Our reception team will let you know what time to come into the practice.
Step 4: During your appointment, your dentist will prioritise getting you out of any pain. They may then request that you attend a follow-up appointment for a check-up or any necessary restorative treatment like a filling or crown. If you have a dental infection (one of the most common reasons patients visit us for emergency care), we may provide antibiotics.
