Introduction to Invisalign®

Invisalign®: Clear aligner system made especially for your teeth.
Treatment time: 6-18 months (depending on treatment objectives).
Results: Straightens your teeth.
Anaesthetic: Only if crowded teeth need to be taken out prior to starting treatment.
Suitable for: Patients who want to straighten their teeth without a fixed metal brace.

Benefits of Invisalign®

  • Invisible: Your aligners are transparent – no one will notice you’re wearing them!
  • Removable: Take your aligners out to eat your normal diet.
  • Time-saving: Fewer check-ups are needed than with metal braces.
  • Comfortable: The aligners are smooth plastic with no metal wires or brace brackets.

What can Invisalign® do for my smile?

  • Straightens teeth.
  • Closes gaps in your teeth.
  • Tackles teeth crowding.
  • Gives you an even bite (which reduces tooth wear).
  • Can reduce decay (as your teeth will be less challenging to clean).

What to expect from treatment

Step 1: Consultation to examine your teeth and explain how the treatment process will work.
Step 2: Impressions and digital scans using our iTero scanner of your teeth are taken. This software allows you to create your aligners and show you a prototype of how your smile will look once it is straight post-treatment.
Step 3: Your aligners are made and sent back to your dentist. You are now ready to start treatment.
Step 4: Every one to two weeks, you will change over the aligners at home. We ask that you come in every 6 weeks for checkups.
Step 5: A retainer is worn each night once your teeth are straight. This is to stop your teeth from moving back into their misaligned position.

What can Invisalign® fix?

invisalign before after

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth is a condition where you do not have enough room for your teeth to fit normally. This can cause plaque or tartar and other harmful bacteria to build up as it is harder for you to brush and floss well.

invisalign before after

Gaps between teeth

Gaps between teeth is when there is extra space between two or more of your teeth. This can cause pockets between your teeth and gums and can cause food to get stuck making them tender and sore. This might also lead to gum disease.

invisalign before after

Open bite

An open bite is when your upper and lower teeth don't touch when you close your mouth. An open bite can make it hard for you to chew or difficult to bite even the most common of food like apples.

invisalign before after

Underbite

An underbite is when you close your mouth and your lower front teeth are in front of your upper teeth. In many cases, this is actually a problem with your lower jaw being too far forward. An underbite can make it hard to chew properly and speak clearly, and it might cause your teeth to wear down more quickly.

invisalign before after

Overbite

An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth. Most people have at least a little overbite. When your overbite is too large, your doctor might tell you you have a deep bite. This can cause problems, from your teeth wearing down to pain in your jaw.

invisalign before after

Crossbite

A crossbite is when you close your mouth and yet some of your upper teeth are sitting inside your lower teeth rather than on the outside. A crossbite can make your teeth wear down or chip. It can also make your gums start to recede or make little notches above your gum line. This kind of damage can lead to painful gum problems or even bone loss.

FAQs

1. What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign treatment is a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth. Using advanced 3D computer-imaging technology, Invisalign shows you your complete treatment plan based on your Invisalign Provider’s prescription, from the initial position of your teeth towards the final desired position. Then, a series of clear aligners are custom-made for your teeth to move them little by little.

Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, gradually moving towards the projected final position. The treatment time depends on your specific needs and will be decided by your Invisalign Provider.

2. How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign aligners move teeth through a series of carefully controlled movements. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign treatment controls the amount of movement each aligner delivers and the timing of the movement. So, at each stage, only certain teeth can move, following the Invisalign treatment plan for that particular stage. This results in an efficient force delivery system.

3. How long does the Invisalign treatment take?

The time taken depends on the complexity of the treatment and is generally comparable to that of traditional braces. During your consultation, your Invisalign Provider can give you more detailed information.

4. Is it better than braces?

For patients who don’t want the world to know they are having their teeth straightened, it is a great choice of treatment. We also recommend to patients who don’t want to alter their diet or brushing habits (the aligners are easily removable for up to 2 hours a day).

5. Is it beneficial for my dental health?

Yes. Having your teeth straightened is very beneficial for your dental health as it exposes more of your tooth surfaces. This makes it easier to reach your teeth with your brush and floss, potentially reducing your risk of decay and gum disease. This also results in fresher breath since food particles can’t get stuck in-between overlapping gaps in your teeth.
