For Dentists

Your dentist will carry out a thorough (but painless) examination of your mouth as part of your routine check-ups.

They will look for symptoms that could indicate an abnormality associated with mouth cancer.

Introduction to mouth cancer screening

Screening time: 5-10 minutes.
Results: Peace of mind that your mouth is cancer-free/your dentist can swiftly refer you for investigations if necessary.
Anaesthetic and drilling: No.
Suitable for: All adult patients.

Keeping you safe and healthy

Mouth cancer is one of the most detectable and treatable of all types of cancer. Our dentists are extremely highly trained at spotting the symptoms, helping you get on the road to recovery as soon as possible.

During your routine dental check-up, your dentist will check for the following:

White and red patches in your mouth.
Lumps in your mouth, jaw, or throat.
Lesions.
Ulcers.
An uneven bite.

Should your dentist notice any of the above, they will ask when you first noticed these abnormalities. You will also be asked if any changes to your voice have occurred.

Mouth cancer screening is a non-invasive and preventive process. In most cases, no follow-up investigations or treatment will be needed. However, it’s paramount that you attend check-ups to have your mouth examined so potential signs can be spotted early.

FAQs

Am I at risk of developing mouth cancer?

Knowing your risk factors is a big step towards lowering your risk of developing cancer. That’s why our dentists will take the time to ask you questions about your lifestyle and family history so they can identify these and help you reduce them in the future.

Common risks include:

A previous oral cancer diagnosis.
A family history of oral cancer.
Tobacco usage.
Regularly consuming more than 15 units of alcohol per week.
Regularly combining alcohol with tobacco usage.
Regular sun exposure (lip cancer is also classed as mouth cancer).
Being over 60 years of age.
