This is a neurotoxin used in cosmetic treatments to temporarily paralyse muscles, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines created by muscle activity. Its benefits include soothing skin texture, preventing new wrinkles and creating a more youthful appearance. It is commonly used around the forehead, corners of the eyes (commonly known as ‘crow’s feet’) and in between the eyebrows (frown lines).
In patients who have an increased gum visibility when smiling, otherwise known as a ‘gummy smile’, wrinkle reduction treatment can help by relaxing the upper lip muscles to reduce gum visibility when smiling. It is also beneficial in relieving jaw ache or tension, often associated with conditions such as TMJD, by reducing the muscle tension and jaw contraction.
In addition to these uses, it can also help reduce underarm sweating by temporarily blocking the nerves that stimulate sweat glands, leading to decreased perspiration.
